THE ART OF THOUGHT - IS THERE SUCH A THING? By Autumn Boyet-Stinton (Original Article Written 1/27/2008)

In the "wee" hours of the morning, as I lay patiently waiting for sleep to come and my thoughts to slow, my mind wondered at different speeds from the rational to the fantastic and back again.   I call this sleep deprived mental wondering "soul surfing" and have found that despite the moments of insanity, there is also clarity to be found.  And while there is great potential for conversation about "soul-surfing" and it's relation to inspiration and creativity, the topic I put up for contemplation and discussion today is this:

THE ART OF THOUGHT...THE ART CONVERSATION - Is there such a thing?

While "surfing" through my mind, I contemplated what attracts me to other like-minded creative people.  (Before I go any further, I must give a shout out to the large collection of amazingly creative and inspiring people in my life.   KUDOS to you all...I enjoy the color that you bring to my life! ...but, I digress!)

The questions that came to me next were rapid fire and covered a vast range of self-exploration questions...

What is it about the "artistic personality type" that appeals to me?  Is it an ability to create beauty?  Is it their inner calm and peace?  Is it an appreciation for the fact that a piece of my soul becomes part of everything I work on?  Is it because I can relate to the feelings and ideas that we undoubtedly have in common? Or is it simply that I admire creativity and the artful soul?

Maybe it is all of that....but maybe it is not quite so complicated.  Maybe I am simply attracted to thought and ideas.  I'm drawn to a simple mind set that allows the artist in us all to think about FEELING and then artfully share feeling by means of different medias.

The next questions that came to me were about artists in society...

Who decided to search and find out that the majority of artists/creative types are left brained?  Does it really matter?  Is art a feeling or an education?  Do you just "have" an artistic ability or is it a skill that can be learned?

I admit, I think that artist are brilliant!  I enjoy learning and growing by means of intelligent conversation.  CONVERSATION - This is an interesting topic too....There is a definite ART to conversation.

Recently, this has been a topic of great interest between my best friend and I.  We have been discussing what makes for good conversation and what makes us think someone is intelligent.  Therefore, I would like to pose an additional line of questions.  Some are simple and some, more challenging.

Are you left of right brained?  Are you left or right handed?  Does intelligence affect the creation of art?  Does intelligence affect the interpretation of art?  Is a conversation about politics of greater intellect than a well crafted, artful conversation about simple life happenings?
